A few days ago as I was enjoying some traditional gospel on youtube, a clip from the movie The Color Purple came on. It was a scene of a worldly woman attempting to sing in a nightclub but she was distracted by singing from a nearby church. The headliner then leads a processional of revelers down a dirt path to the church while singing the moving hymn. Family, Food, and Fun!!!

I’m sitting here rehearsing the events of a great weekend! Memorial Day weekend is the official kick-off of summer, where I live. On Saturday I enjoyed the annual Tea Party festival in my community, stopped by a bridal shower, and ended the evening with family at my cousin’s cookout. I'm FREE!...Free to Be Me!

What does it mean to be FREE to BE ME? In my experience this statement has usually been uttered by someone who has grown tired of feeling oppressed, belittled, unappreciated, and overlooked, to name a few. I can identify.
